Research Shows Chocolate Milk May Be A Good Alternative For Post-Exercise Recovery Aid

"Chocolate milk is one of my favorite post-exercise recovery drinks because it contains whey protein, which helps muscles recover and repair…Plus, it tastes great while boosting calcium and vitamin D, which research shows is important for preserving cartilage and joint health…Drinking one large glass after you work out will boost muscle growth and speed recovery."

With Fall sports in full swing, athletes young and old look to electrolyte-loaded sports drinks to help refuel and hydrate themselves. But so many are filled with sugar and artificial flavors, sweeteners and colors. And water just might be a missed opportunity to rehydrate with nutrients they need. Research shows that milk and chocolate milk, believe it or not, may be an optimal post-exercise recovery aid. A new choice for chocolate milk lovers is TruMoo Fat-Free chocolate milk, because it has eight essential nutrients, no high fructose corn syrup, no fat, no artificial flavors or colors and no artificial hormones and without being overly sweet.

According to a study published in the International Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition and earlier ones in the Journal of Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, chocolate milk (not white milk) provides necessary recovery nutrients like carbohydrates, protein and some sodium while providing enough water to help hydrate after a particularly tough workout.

Fitness Magazine describes it this way; “Compared to plain milk, water, or most sports drinks, it (chocolate milk) has double the carbohydrate and protein content, perfect for replenishing tired muscles. Its high water content replaces fluids lost as sweat, preventing dehydration. Plus it packs a nutritional bonus of calcium, and includes just a little sodium and sugar -- additives that help recovering athletes retain water and regain energy."

Men’s Health ran an article called 40 Foods with Super Powers and Lynn Grieger, an online health, food, and fitness coach had this to say:  "Chocolate milk is one of my favorite post-exercise recovery drinks because it contains whey protein, which helps muscles recover and repair…Plus, it tastes great while boosting calcium and vitamin D, which research shows is important for preserving cartilage and joint health…Drinking one large glass after you work out will boost muscle growth and speed recovery."

While athletes try to gain their competitive edge, chocolate milk can supply athletes with the necessary nutrients that sports drinks or just plain water might miss and it tastes great.
